Wild Beasts | Two Dancers

TOP TRACKS
  • "All The King's Men"
  • "We Still Got The Taste Dancin' On Our Tongues"
  • "Two Dancers (I)"

The first track of Two Dancers opens with a driving bassline that leads into some nice woodblock drumming and a great little guitar riff. Everything is chugging along beautifully with the atmosphere channeling the best of The xx, and then suddenly the 1:30 mark introduces us to Hayden Thorpe's falsetto. On first listen, Thorpe's vocals are jarring and unnatural and drive many people away from the record. However, giving up on the album because of the odd falsetto is a shame because eventually the vocals make sense with the setting of the album, and the listener is rewarded with a fantastic moody record.

There are two lead singers in Wild Beasts, Hayden Thorpe and Tom Flemming. Flemming's style is definitely more baritone than Thorpe's, and in looking at the graph above, it's easy to see which songs have Flemming as the lead. If you simply can't get past Thorpe's voice, I suggest trying out the tracks where the percentage of normal vocal stylings is highest (All The King's Men and both Two Dancer songs).
